Fortunately, the Penn Women's Fully Integrated Rectovaginal Symptom Team (FIRST) clinic offers hope to women suffering from pelvic floor disorders. A group of female physicians founded the clinic in 2021 with the express purpose of assisting women with PFDs in a welcoming and encouraging setting.

"We are aware that discussing pelvic floor disorders can be challenging," said Farzana Rashid, MD, the FIRST Clinic's director and director of Penn Women's GI Health. "The goal of our team of female doctors is to create a secure environment in which patients can talk freely about their symptoms and worries. We think we can give patients a sense of empowerment and control over their health by making a warm and inviting environment."

Why Pay a Visit to the FIRST Clinic?

PFDs are common, even though they are rarely discussed. Up to 1 in 4 women will encounter PFD at some point in their lives, and the frequency rises with age.

Pelvic floor disorders can arise during or after pregnancy and childbirth, presenting with symptoms such as constipation, abdominal discomfort, and problems with the bladder and bowel, such as fecal or urine incontinence. PFD symptoms have the potential to seriously lower your quality of life and even cause depression.

"At the Penn Women's FIRST Clinic, our goal is to make patients feel better faster and improve their quality of life by bringing together multiple disciplines to address their pelvic floor disorders in one place," said Dr. Rashid. "We are aware that these conditions can be complicated and have an impact on a variety of areas of patients' lives.

Three female doctors simultaneously evaluate patients at the Penn Women's FIRST Clinic: a urogynecologist, a colorectal surgeon, and a gastroenterologist. The FIRST Clinic treats the following conditions:
